Sometimes, things are scarier when they remain unexplained. If Netflix decides to make a second season of The Haunting of Hill House, it'll have to focus on something.

In true Hill House fashion, though, that's not the end of their stories. William's ghost is the top-hat aficionado who haunts Luke. The wheelchair ghost appears throughout the series and torments the Hill children from the very first episode onward. The Red Room and Hill House don't like it when a meal goes unfinished, either, which is why the Crain children spend their adult lives seeing ghosts and supernatural visions. Now, it wants them to back so it can finish the job.

If the Crains aren't careful, they'll end up exactly like Poppy, William, and the rest — and that's definitely not a good thing. She's a real, live human girl, at least for a little while.

The production staff does, though, and they almost shared the secret. "We had a whole history of Hill House that we were going to shoot," Mike Flanagan hinted. "We were going to open several episodes of the show with this kind of history.... which would show you the construction of Hill House, the history of the Hill family, who everybody was." If you're having a hard time wrapping your head around the notion that ghosts don't necessarily need to be the spirits of deceased people then you're going to have to open your mind a bit. When Steven (Michiel Huisman) said that ghosts are guilt and ghosts are secrets, it was a nice metaphor, sure, but the show also takes this idea quite literally. While Nell is being haunted by the Bent-Neck Lady and Luke (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) is being followed by William Hill, Shirley finds herself haunted by the man she cheated on her husband with.
In the absence of any real explanation, some fans are arguing the poem is there specifically to set up a second season, should Netflix choose to greenlight one. For Olivia, their story is a cautionary tale. Thanks to Hill House, Olivia becomes suicidal.

So yes, viewers should come for the requisite jump scares and various bits of creepy business. Bugs crawling out of mouths, corpses stiffly rising from slabs, spirits that go from pretty young things to withered old crones, unexpectedly gaping mouths and melting faces — all present and accounted for.
The series premiered on Netflix on October 12, 2018. The Haunting of Hill House received critical acclaim, particularly for its acting, directing, and production values. A follow-up series by Flanagan titled The Haunting of Bly Manor, with most of the same crew and some of the same cast but a different story and characters, was released on October 9, 2020. Its past installments have found attendees stealthing their way through a Victorian home and embarking on a Blade Runner-esque bounty hunt. You can also float between rooms of the mansion, and even get a peek behind the scenes with a VIP ticket. The Netflix adaptation of the book is created by Mike Flanagan.
